How to Transfer Crypto Assets Between Sui and Ethereum Via Sui Bridge
The first Sui native bridge is officially live on mainnet as of September 30th, 2024. It’s a a significant milestone for the Sui ecosystem, providing a secure and efficient connection between Ethereum and Sui blockchains. Unlike other third party solutions, Sui Bridge is secured by Sui’s own network validators ensuring trustworthily asset transfers with low gas fees and low latency. In this tutorial, we’ll test Sui Bridge by moving $ETH from a MetaMask wallet to a Slush Wallet.
Why Sui Bridge is a Major Development for the Ecosystem
Sui Bridge is the native solution for moving assets from external ecosystems, such as Ethereum, to the Sui network. Ethereum users no longer have to jump through hoops to access Sui blockchain primitives like Programmable Transaction Blocks (PTBs) and Object Model smart contracts. Both decentralization and security are achieved via Sui Bridge. For now, the two crypto assets users can transfer with Sui Bridge are $WETH and $ETH. However, more will be added in the future and Sui network validators vote on enhancements.
How to Use Sui Bridge to Transfer $ETH to Sui Network
Let’s start this tutorial by assuming you have some $ETH in a MetaMask wallet and you want to bridge it to the Sui network. We’ll also assume you have a Sui Wallet. Start by going to the following site: Bridge.Sui.io
Once there, you’ll need to connect both your Metamask and Sui wallets. In this example, I’m using a Sui wallet that is linked to my SuiNS domain @stouy.
Step 1: Connect Both your Ethereum and Sui Wallets
- You’ll see both the Ethereum and the Sui logos at the top-right of your screen. First, click “Connect” next to the ETH logo and select MetaMask (or whatever Ethereum wallet you use).
- Confirm the connection in your MetaMask wallet.
- Click on “Connect” next to the Sui logo and select Sui Wallet.
- Confirm the connection to Sui Bridge in your Sui Wallet.
Step 2: Initiate the Sui Bridge Transfer Process
- Ensure that Ethereum is on top (from ETHEREUM) and “To Sui” is at the bottom.
- Enter the amount of $ETH you want to bridge (or click “Max” to use all available $ETH).
- Review the estimated Ethereum gas fees (Sui gas fees are sponsored) and the amount you’ll receive on the Sui network.
- When you’re sure everything looks good, Click the “Bridge Assets” button.
Step 3: Confirm the Transaction in MetaMask wallet
- Your MetaMask wallet will open. Review the transaction details and click “Confirm”.
Step 4: Wait for Confirmation of the $ETH to Sui Transfer
- After confirming the transaction in your Metamask wallet, you’ll be taking to the Sui Bridge “Transaction Details” page where you’ll wait.
- You’ll see the following status updates: Initiated, Verified, Claimed, and Delivered. When the green checkmark shows “Delivered” the $ETH to Sui network transfer process is complete. The bridging process typically takes about 15 minutes because the Ethereum network is pretty slow.
Step 5: Verify the Transfer of your $ETH to Sui
- Once completed, check your Sui wallet for the bridged ETH (it will appear as “ETH by Sui”)
- You can verify the transaction details on SuiVision or Suiscan by clicking “Explore”.
Important Notes on Using Sui Bridge
- The gas fee on the Sui crypto side is currently sponsored (covered by the network).
- The initial launch supports only $ETH and $WETH, with plans to expand to additional assets in the future.
- Liquidity from WETH-USDC pools will begin migrating to ETH-USDC pools on Sui in the near future.
Sui Bridge Makes it Easy to Transfer Ethereum Assets
The launch of Sui Bridge marks a significant step forward for Web3 interoperability, making it easier for users to move assets from Ethereum to Sui. It’s is very user-friendly requiring just one main confirmation in your MetaMask wallet to initiate the asset transfer. Sui Bridge paves the way for increased liquidity and activity on the Sui blockchain. Sui Bridge will evolve to support more crypto assets and functionalities paving the way for mass adoption. Please stay tuned to Stouy Crypto for future Sui Bridge updates and expansions!
