How to Transfer $SOL from Phantom to Ledger Nano X Hardware Wallet and Store Crypto more Securely

Storing the majority of your Solana in a cold wallet is always a good idea as it adds an extra level of security.  In this tutorial, you’ll learn a simple way to transfer $SOL from a hot Phantom wallet to a Ledger Nano X hardware wallet.  In addition, you’ll see how the Ledger Live app makes managing your Solana and other crypto easy.  Make sure to scroll to the bottom of this tutorial to see our video example of moving $SOL to Ledger from a Phantom wallet.

Once you have $SOL in your Phantom wallet and a Ledger Nano X by your side, start by installing the Ledger Live app on your desktop computer.  Next, inside the Ledger Live app click on “My Ledger” and connect your Nano X hardware wallet to your computer.  Unlock your device by entering your Pin number.  Your Nano X is now connected to Ledger Live and you’ll see the “App Catalog”.  Look for the Solana app in Ledger Live and click the Install button.Install the Solana app in your Ledger Live.

Now that the Solana app is installed in Ledger Live, click “Add Account”.  On your Ledger Nano X, open the Solana app and the synchronization process will automatically begin.  The default name of the new account will be “Solana 1” but you can change it to anything else you might prefer.  Click “Add Account” to complete the process.Add Solana account to Ledger Live.

You’ll be taken to the Accounts section of the Ledger Live app where you’ll see your newly created Solana account, click on it.  The new Solana account will open and you’ll see a “Receive” button, click on it.  Copy the “Receive Address” for your Solana Ledger account in Ledger Live.  Next, on your Ledger device, you’ll need to verify the address which you can do by pressing both buttons at the same time to approve.  “Address Shared Securely” message will show and you can click the Done button.Copy your Solana account receive address in Ledger Live.

Next, open your Phantom wallet and click on Solana.  Click the “Send” button and paste the Receive Address (which you copied in Ledger Live) into the Recipient field in Phantom.  Enter the amount of $SOL you want to send to your Ledger account.  The first time you do this, I recommend starting with a small amount of Solana as a test.  Once you verify the process works as expected, go ahead and scale up the amount you send.  Last steps is to click the “Send” button in Phantom.  The Sent message will show within a few seconds and you can click the “view transaction” link to see the details on SolScan.io if you’d like.Confirm send of $SOL from Phantom to Ledger Live Solana account receive address.

Go back to the Ledger Live app and go to the Home section.  Scroll down to the “Asset Allocation” section and click on Solana.  You’ll see your Solana account as well as the newly received $SOL sent from your Phantom wallet!View your $SOL in Ledger Live Solana account.

Final Step: Connect Ledger Live Solana Account to your Phantom Wallet

Make sure your Ledger Nano X is still plugged into your computer.  Go back to your Phantom wallet and click the 3 horizontal lines in the upper-left.  Click the + sign to Add / Connect Wallet > click “Connect Hardware Wallet”.Connect your Ledger Nano X Hardware wallet to Phantom.

Connect your Ledger message will pop-open, click “Connect”.Connect your Ledger to your Phantom wallet.

A box will pop-open that says “Phantom wants to connect to a HID device”, select Nano X and click Connect.Phantom wants to connect to HID device Nano X, click Connect button.

“Ledger Nano X connected” message will appear, click Continue.  You’ll see “Select chains to connect” check box for Solana and continue.Phatom Select Chains to connect, Solana.

“Connecting your accounts” will appear as Phantom is finding your Solana account in Ledger Live.  A few seconds will go by and “Accounts Connected” message will show next.  Click the “Select Accounts” button.Phantom wallet connected to Ledger Nano X hardware Solana wallet accounts.

Select the box for your Ledger Live Solana account and click Continue.  “Account Added” message will display and you’re done.Select Solana Ledger accounts to connect Phantom wallet to.

Open your Phantom wallet and click the 3 horizontal lines again.  You’ll now see your Ledger Solana account in your Phantom wallet.Ledger Nano X Solana account has been added to your Phantom wallet.

The process is complete and you’re now able to easily send $SOL from a hot Phantom wallet to your cold storage Ledger Nano X Hardware wallet.
