Getting Starting with Bitcoin STAMPS and SRC-20 Tokens

Bitcoin has added new use cases and gained more utility in 2023 than every before.  It’s no longer considered just a “store of value” asset.  Developers are now building cool things on top of Bitcoin similar what previously happened on other L1 chains like Ethereum and Solana.  The creation of Ordinals protocol, inscriptions, and BRC-20 tokens lit a match for what is possible.  The STAMP protocol and SRC-20s are the next evolution of digital collectibles on Bitcoin.

Created by developer “Mike in Space“, STAMPS cannot be pruned by nodes because they store base64 data directly within unspent transaction output (UTXO) making them permanent digital art on Bitcoin.  STAMP is an acronym for “Secure Tradable Art Maintained Permanently”.  Theoretically, as long as the Bitcoin blockchain exists, STAMPS and SRC-20 tokens will be around making them more desirable than most all other forms of niche crypto assets.

In this Stouy tutorial, we’ll show you key Bitcoin STAMPS and SRC-20 websites to help enhance your understanding.  We’ll also walk you through the process of buying STAMPS and SRC-20 tokens on the top marketplaces.   Finally, make sure to scroll to the bottom to view our in-depth video examples so let’s get started…

Bitcoin SRC-20 Marketplaces and Tools for AnalysisStampscan.xyz is a leading Bitcoin SRC-20 marketplace.

The leading marketplace for buying, selling, and, minting Bitcoin SRC-20 tokens is Stampscan.xyz.  You’ll find the largest selection and typically the best liquidity there well.  Another good option for SRC-20 tokens and STAMPS is OpenStamp.io.  They don’t currently have as many SRC-20s available but that could change as the marketplace matures.  If the SRC-20 token you’re interested is on both marketplaces, it’s a good idea to compare prices before making a purchase.

The two most popular SRC-20 tokens by holder count are currently are $STAMP and $KEVIN.  Stamp Market Cap is an awesome website for analyzing SRC-20 projects.  Key metrics to take into account are total supply of the token, market cap, floor price, volume, and holder count.  I like to look for SRC-20 tokens with a relatively low market cap and large number of holders.  Projects that are more decentralized have a better chance of increasing in value overtime.

How to Buy STMAP Bitcoin SRC-20 Tokens on Stampscan.xyzExample of buying $STMAP StampMap SRC-20 tokens on Stampscan.

In this example of buying SRC-20 tokens, we’re going to use the Stampscan marketplace and the specific token we’ll purchase is ticker symbol $STMAP which is the token for StampMap.  All SRC-20 tokens are highly speculative at this point in time but I personally like the idea of STMAP as it’s the underling utility token of StampMap. StampMap is a community pixel art project on Bitcoin and $STMAP is the underlying src-20 token for the StampMap project.

A growing community art project on a 90,000 pixel map, StampMap is unique because it incorporates both Bitcoin STAMPS and SRC-20 tokens.  I feel like StampMap has potential for mass adoption given the success of Bitmap on the Ordinals side of things.  The circulating supply of STMAP is 90,000,000 and the current market cap is around 5 million.  It costs 1,000 $STMAP SRC-20 tokens to obtain 1 pixel within the StampMap community.  Users are then free to inscribe their favorite images, stamps, or words into their StampMap pixels.

Now that we’ve identified the $STMAP as the token to purchase, the next step is to go to Stampscan.xyz and click on “All”.   Select STMAP and click on “Trade”.  Your specific budget will determine the number of tokens that you’re able to purchase based on the current market price.  The STMAP listed at the top will be closest to the actual current market value of the token.  For example, let’s say STMAP is currently trading at $0.03… The tokens listed at the top will be close to that fair market value but take your time and make sure you have a good understanding before making a purchase.  When you’ve identified an amount and unit price that fits your budget, click the Buy button. You’ll be prompted to connect your Leather wallet (Unisat and OKX wallets work as well) to Stampscan.Stampscan connect Leather wallet.

After connecting your digital wallet, review the transaction in detail. Confirm that the SRC-20 STMAP amount and seller price are correct.  The “Miner Fee” amount will vary depending on how busy the Bitcoin blockchain is at the time of your transaction.  When the Bitcoin mempool is loaded with pending transactions, fees will most likely be high and you might consider waiting for a more opportune time to purchase.Review STMAP buy order on Stampscan.xyz

Click the “Confirm Buy” button when you’re ready to finalize the purchase.  Your Leather wallet will open where you’ll see the total price that factors in the “Transaction Fee” which you must account for on-top of the miner fee. Confirm STMAP purchase in your Leather Bitcoin wallet.

After review, click “Confirm” and you’ll see a message that says, “You have bought the token successfully! You can check the progress here”.  Click the “here” link to open Mempool.space where you’ll monitor the progress of your STMAP (or any SRC-20 token) purchase. Open Mempool.space to monitor progress of SRC-20 token purchase.

The time it takes for your SRC-20 token purchase to be confirmed on the Bitcoin blockchain will vary.  In my experience, it typically takes 30 minutes on the low end and up to an hour on the high end.  Once the Bitcoin mempool shows you have a few confirmations, go back to Stampscan.xyz and click on “Profile”.  Connect your Leather wallet and you’ll see the STMAP in “Your Token Balance”. I encourage you to spend time on each site but in this tutorial, we’re going use OpenStamp to buy our first Bitcoin STAMP.  StamPunks are a collection of 10,000 Bitcoin STAMPS paying homage to the iconic Crypto Punks collection on Ethereum.  They claim to be the most secure and immutable collection of Punks.  Given that Bitcoin STAMPS are the most permanent form of digital collectables, it kind of makes sense that StamPunks could grow in popularity.  With over 3,000 holders, StamPunks is the most decentralized collection currently on OpenStamp which is a positive indicator in my opinion.  Finally, we’ve already seen Bitcoin Punks on the ordinals side of things go up in value.  Therefore, I’m bullish on the long-term potential of StamPunks for all those reasons which is why I decided to buy one for the purpose of this BTC STAMPS tutorial.  It’s not financial advice and please do your own research.  Only buy Bitcoin STAMPS that you personally love and are willing to hold for a long-time. StamPunk collection of Bitcoin STAMPS.

The process for buying Bitcoin STAMPS on OpenStamp is pretty straight forward.  First, click on “Marketplace” and select the “STAMPS” tab to see all the collections they offer.  Floor Price, 24 Hour Volume, Supply, and Holders are the key metrics.  In my opinion, the greater the number of holders, the better chance the STAMPS collection has to increase in value so it’s a metric I like to focus in on. Also, collectors often like to focus on lower STAMP numbers so please keep that in mind as it may or may not matter to you.

Once you’ve identified the Bitcoin STAMPs you’d like to purchase, click on the “Buy” button.  You’ll see the Order Price, Network Fee and Market Fee.  Keep in mind that the Network Fee will vary depending on how busy the Bitcoin mempool is at the time of your purchase. OpenStamp Order Review before confirming you Bitcoin STAMP purchase.

After reviewing the transaction, click the “Confirm” button and your Leather wallet (or UniSat wallet) will open.  Next, select High, Standard, or Low which is the speed at which the confirmations will happen in the mempool.  In this example, we’ll choose “Low”. Select the Transaction speed in Bitcoin Leather wallet for STAMP purchase.

The last step in the buying process is to click the “Send” button.  A message will display that says, “Successfully submitted the order and you TxID (transaction ID) will show. OpenStamp successfully submitted order message.

Copy your TxID (a.k.a. transaction hash) and click the “View Details” button to open the Bitcoin mempool where you can monitor the status of your purchase.  It will take anywhere from 25 minutes to an hour for the Bitcoin STAMPS purchase to be confirmed so please be patient.  When you see a few confirmations, go back to OpenStamp and click on your wallet address at the top-right of your screen and click Assets.  Next, click on the “Stamps” tab and your newly purchase StamPunks digital asset will display.OpenStamp view owned Assets in you account.
